Whether your first social media efforts are on Facebook or another platform, setting up your profile is essential. But what is appropriate for one platform may not be appropriate for all platforms. What should be the same on all platforms is your username to make it easier for your accounts to be found.

Include an appropriately sized photo. One size does not fit all, although most platforms allow images to be cropped. Avoid images that are too large for profile photos or too small for cover photos. Below are the photo sizes for social media platforms:


  • 180 x 180 - profile
  • 851 x 315 – cover image


  • 400 x 400 - profile
  • 1500 x 1500 – cover image


  • 200 x 200 – personal profile
  • 100 x 60 – standard logo
  • 646 x 220 – Company banner


  • 120 x 120 – profile
  • 1080 x 608 – cover image


  • 180 x 180 - Profile


  • 400 x 400 - Profile

The level of a profile's detail varies greatly from one social media platform to another. LinkedIn's profile, for example, includes the account holder's entire professional resume. Facebook, on the other hand, allows you to choose which details to include but limits the categories that can be selected. Google+ allows entering resume details but only displays a summary of the final school or work experience with your profile photo. Twitter's profile is limited to a photo, paragraph, location, website address, and birthday. Other social media platforms are equally limited. But all provide space to include your website.

Your social media profile is a window into your personality, your job, your interests—sure, but, if done correctly, it can be so much more than that. It can drive people to your website or other online assets; it can promote some of your best content; and it can lead to new clients and sales. When you reach out to a new contact or prospect, the first thing they’re going to do is look you up online. Your profile needs to be both impressive and discoverable.
