Marketing Monday – Finding Your Spoken Voice

An important element in marketing your books involves speaking opportunities either in interviews, radio or television appearances, or presentations at bookstores or libraries.

Social Media Examiner, a great source for information about using social media for marketing, also produces podcasts, on-demand online radio shows that can be listened to at any time. Recently, they published a podcast on how to speak with authority and credibility. Presented by a professional actor, David Lawrence, it includes many tips on the mechanics of speaking.

blue-logo-pngYou don't have to be a professional actor to speak authoritatively, a point Mr. Lawrence makes in the podcast as well as in the Social Media Examiner's blog post. But you do need confidence and that requires practice. One of the most cost-effective ways to get the practice needed in a structured program is to join a Toastmasters International club. The Toastmasters program involves two tracks, communication, and leadership. The first communication track includes ten prepared speeches, each one introducing successively more complex skills. In addition to giving prepared speeches, members receive evaluations pointing out what was done well and what could be improved. And finally, each meeting includes a segment of impromptu speaking to develop ease at speaking off the cuff.
