The Guilded Pen

In 2012, SDWEG introduced The Guilded Pen—First Edition, a compilation of short stories, poems, and imaginative essays by our members. We've been introducing a new edition every year since.

We are now accepting submissions for The Guilded Pen, 8th Edition, our 2019 anthology. This is the eighth year that we will publish the short stories, poems, and imaginative essays by our members. This year we are seeking submissions from members that fit into three categories: “Lost,” “Found,” and “Still Looking.”

Submission Guidelines and Publication Agreement

The Rules

How many submissions will you accept per author and what’s the acceptable word count?

  • Authors may submit up to 3 items which may be poems, short stories, and/or essays.
  • Poetry submissions are limited to 35 lines per poem.
  • Prose/Essay submissions are limited to a total of 4,500 words in the aggregate (i.e., any word count variation so long as the total number of words for all 3 submissions does not exceed 4,500).

How do I submit my poems/stories/essays?

We accept submissions in electronic format only sent via email as an attachment. Submissions must be formatted in Microsoft Word, double-spaced, and with no artwork, sketches or doodles please! Submissions should be emailed to: guildedpensubmissions@gmail.com. WE CANNOT ACCEPT SUBMISSIONS IN ANY FORMAT OTHER THAN ELECTRONIC.

Send your submissions to: Marcia Buompensiero, Managing Editor, guildedpensubmissions@gmail.com

  • Submission Period: April 1 through July 1, 2019
  • Deadline for submissions: July 1, 2019

When will I know if my submission is accepted?

A confirmation email indicating receipt of your submission will be sent to you by the managing editor. Submissions are catalogued, assigned a control number, and the author’s name is removed before being sent to the panel of reviewers (usually 2). Submissions are scored using a rubric to determine if they meet the established criteria for publishing. Upon completing the review cycle, an editor will notify the author if the submission is accepted as submitted, or if additional edits are required for publication in the anthology. Typically, the review period is 2-3 weeks.

The anthology is produced as a fund-raising project for SDWEG, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. All royalties from the sale of the anthologies support the mission of the SDWEG which is to promote, support, and encourage the writing art for adults and youth.

  1. Howdy: Where would I find the guidelines for submitting something for your next anthology? Thanks, Wayne Raffesberger

    1. Hello, Wayne,

First, we accept submissions only from our members. We would, of course, welcome your joining the Guild and attending our monthly meetings. You can find out more about membership on our Home, About, and Join the Guild pages.

Second, the requirements for submitting will be announced closer to the time we will begin accepting them, usually in March or April.

Thanks for your interest in the Guild. I hope we’ll see you soon.
